A study About children’s health released by Yale University in Washington D.C. in the yearly meeting of the Obesity Council, demonstrates that the most wholesome breakfast cereals are the cereals most frequently marketed to kids.
Children have 85 percent more sugar, 65 percent less fibre and 60 percent more sodium than cereals marketed to adults. This is the perfect storm of nutrient badness guaranteed to cause health problems in anyone who consumes such a mix frequently.
The authors go On to indict cereal makers for targeting kids with advertisements and in-store promotions. They indicate self-regulation of advertising isn’t effective and stronger regulation will be in order.
However, the question arises, does advertising force parents to buy products? Do advertisers induce parents to feed their kids nutritionally bankrupt food?
The simple fact is, children don’t buy breakfast cereal, parents do. Cereal companies do induce parents to place candy-like breakfast goods in the pantry to the exclusion of much healthier foods.
While Cereal makers deserve no praise, the issue isn’t the nutritionally bankrupt cereal.
The problem isn’t advertising.
The solution Isn’t government control or increased regulation. There are already a zillion government regulations in every area of life which, for the most part, do nothing but increase taxes, impair liberty, drive up costs and create more problems than they resolve.
For parents to take responsibility for their childrens nutritional welfare, not leave it up to the advertising department of a cereal business.
My grandchildren have no flavor Whatsoever for the bankrupt sludge many kids live on because my kids, the parents, know the fundamentals of nutrition and know without doubt that a diet of high carbohydrate foods makes you fat and destroys your health and they understand why this is true. And because they know the fundamentals of carbohydrates, protein and fat influence metabolism and how metabolism determines your and your childrens health, they’re not hypnotized by dancing lions or adorable bears into purchasing boxes of nutrient junk trying to imitate healthful food.
We all And if our understanding of nutrition comes mostly from advertising or by an unschooled recitation of the exact old pop-nutrition information that has led to 68% of America being obese, then we’re doomed.
Without An ACCURATE comprehension of what food does when you put it in your mouth, chew and swallow, you just can’t make an informed nutrient decision and you are forever at the mercy advertisers asserts.
The only means to make great choices for your kids or yourself is to be educated. Learn the fundamentals of diet, nutrition and metabolism nicely enough which you can use them when you eat out or when you buy items in a grocery store you wish to feed and prepare to yourself and the people you love and care for most.
